It might not seem possible now, but one day your wedding planning will be finished, you’ll officially be married (yay!), and it will FINALLY be time for your honeymoon.
For us, the honeymoon was always the light at the end of the tunnel. Planning large events is not something we had a lot of experience doing and neither one of us really loves being the center of attention. That being said, wedding planning wasn’t exactly our favorite thing to do. What did keep us going was the thought of a tropical honeymoon where we could relax and enjoy being married.
In the end we decided to take a Caribbean cruise to celebrate our honeymoon, and it was absolutely perfect. I’m so happy we did! If you’re in the process of planning your honeymoon, I would highly suggest cruising. Here’s what we loved about this option. Get ready for waves, sun, and SO…MUCH…FOOD!
There’s No Planning Required
Planning a wedding is hard enough. Don’t put more on your plate! With cruising, making your travel itinerary could not be easier. Pick a time frame when you’re free and see what is available. We were able to find the perfect 10-day cruise that lined up exactly with my school’s winter break. I didn’t have to take any additional time off, and it gave me something to look forward to while teaching this December. Once you find the cruise you like, simply signup and pack your bags! That’s planning I can get behind!
You really cant go wrong with any of the cruise destinations in the Caribbean. All of the islands have the most amazing beaches with beautiful, clear water. I love it when you can see your toes! It makes my heart happy. The Caribbean is also warm year round, so no need to wait until summer to celebrate those nuptials.
Food, Food, and More FOOD
The amount of food available on a cruise ship at all times is truly unfathomable. You have to experience it. I mean, the food is UNLIMITED. Everyday there is a huge buffet for breakfast and lunch. They include everything you could ever want. I’m talking pineapple, melon, yogurt, oatmeal, pancakes, eggs, french toast, hash browns, cereal, bagels…EVERYTHING. I’m so hungry now! For dinner, you can go to the ship’s restaurants and have four-course meals every night. Not to mention on Anthem of the Seas there is a pizza, coffee, and pastries shop open 24 hours a day. Yummmm!
Tropical Drinks…Yes, I’m Serious
Did someone say piña colada? I’m all about the occasional “treat yo’self” drink, but I usually can’t take myself seriously enough to order a strawberry daiquiri anywhere else. In cruise world though, a frozen beverage is a socially acceptable order that you can get almost anywhere on the ship. It’s heaven. *Sigh*
As you already know, I love to travel. I like to explore new places and will literally walk for miles in new cities just so I can see it all (or at least as much as humanly possible). While I normally love this type of travel, I didn’t want to feel guilty on my honeymoon about sleeping in or taking it easy. On the flip side, I didn’t want to be bored! 10 days is a long time!
A cruise is a nice compromise between these two types of travel. You get days at sea to relax and days at port to venture out. Did someone say snorkeling? Posting up on a gorgeous beach always works too!
Entertainment on Royal Caribbean is getting out of control. I say that as a compliment. The performers and technology being used for set production is reaching a broadway level. I’ve never seen technology so well integrated with a play before. The effects they were able to create with video walls and lighting were breathtaking. You have to take advantage of this when you go! Also, it’s always nice to get dressed up and feel like you are going to the theater! So classy.
Everyday our room was straightened up and the bed was made TWICE. Not once, TWICE! If you need anything on board, every staff member is very accommodating and helpful. Also, room service? Yes, please!
Time to Unplug…Literally
On most cruises today you have the option of buying Internet packages for each of your devices. I decided not to buy one for a number of reasons. First, it’s super expensive. I would be lying if I said the price didn’t factor into my decision to not purchase an Internet package. Would it have been nice to post Instagram photos along the way during our trip? Yes. Is that worth $1,000? For me, no. You would be surprised at how many people think it is! There were whole families on their phones!
I also find that since we are with our phones and computers so much, it’s refreshing to have a break. When else does this really happen anymore? My husband (so formal now!) and I used our phones to take photos, but that’s it. I have to say that it felt pretty liberating. If you can be without the Internet, I would highly suggest it. You can look at your phone when you get back! I promise.
