Last summer I went on my first trip to Europe. The initial itinerary included London, Paris, and Rome. It was literally my dream vacation and something I had always wanted to do. We’d land in London and then take Ryan Air flights to the other countries before heading home.
Unfortunately, while searching for flights back to Boston, we found that leaving Europe from these locations was really pricey. We eventually decided to start exploring other options. That’s when we luckily stumbled upon Lisbon. A flight from Lisbon to Boston was actually pretty cheap! Neither of us had been to Portugal, and we had no idea what to expect from the city whatsoever. It was going to be the last 3 days of our trip. If nothing else, we figured we’d just sit outside and drink wine all day. Not so bad right?
In the end, Lisbon became the most pleasant surprise we ever could have asked for. It was absolutely amazing, and the people were so welcoming! If you’ve haven’t thought about traveling to Lisbon, here’s why you need to add it to your bucket list ASAP!
The Praça do Comércio
This is the main square in the city. It’s HUGE! I love open spaces and this square definitely offers that. It’s right across from the Rio Tajo and is surrounded by shops and cafes. Honestly, I could probably spend a whole day there drinking coffee and wine. So pretty!
The views from Lisbon are unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Simply breathtaking. The city is filled with giant hills, so you do need to be prepared for a lot of walking and stair climbing! (You can take cable cars as well though and the subway system is super clean and pretty.) While you are there visit the Castelo de São Jorge. Its on top of a huge hill and you can almost see the whole city from there. Make sure you visit this! I promise you will be happy you did!
The color scheme of Lisbon is iconic. You have these vibrant orange rooftops, white walls, and colorful mosaic tiles everywhere. When I say everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE! They are all over the sidewalks, on the houses, and even in the subway. It’s gorgeous! The city is also speckled with pops of fuchsia flowers. We all know how I feel about my flowers! 🙂
Lisbon is super affordable. This was such a good feeling after spending two weeks in more expensive European cities. The breakfast in this picture was $2! It included FRESH squeezed orange juice, a shot of expresso, and the best ham and cheese sandwich I have ever had. We splurged and got a muffin as well for $1. Craziness! The excitement on my face says it all lol. Wine in Lisbon is also about $2-$3 a bottle. Be still my heart!
The Lisbon Oceanarium
The Lisbon Oceanarium is in the more modern/downtown portion of Lisbon. We really enjoyed our day trip here. It was a little less than a 20 minute drive away from the main square and we hopped in an Uber to get there. (Seriously, what did people do before Uber?!) Now, full disclosure, we LOVE aquariums! I think anyone would find that area to be a lot of fun though. Also, the otters were so cute! How can you resist them?! There is a cable car that you can take nearby too. I was a little skeptical, but it ended up being a lot of fun and of course super affordable!
So there you have it, why you should visit Lisbon. I think you should definitely do it! I’d love to hear about your travels too!
